Re-finding things!

4/18/06, 5:01 am.
40º F. Getting light out, ENE wind 5 mph.

Good morning,

So ..... another day is starting. Looks to be a nice one too. This area is earning it’s nick name, "Cooler by the Lake" these days. With the wind off of the lake, the temperatures have been held down from those inland by 5-10º F. Actually our highs are about 10º F above normal for this time of year. Right now, I would not mind if the temperature was a bit warmer. Must be getting old or something.

I actually am making some progress in clearing off and cleaning up my half of our "desk." In the process, I "re-found" a couple of mimeographed papers. They were newsletters from my Uncle Carl’s church from 1934-ish. I copied them with the scanner and sent them to his "kids" and some other folks. One of Uncle Carl’s daughters wrote back, thanking me profusely for sending it. We found it in my Grandma Nelson’s Bible along with some other things. I will scan them also and then probably send the originals to MaryAnn for her keepsakes of her Dad. The originals are mimeographed and look like they were from the "end of the production run" as they are rather lightly printed. It is some interesting reading them and trying to imagine what things were like at the time, during the depression, in a very small Lutheran church in Avoca, Iowa - receiving a load of firewood, but more is needed; another room in the church heated for the confirmation class; encouraging people to use their envelops , putting in 5¢, 10¢, or even $1.00 every week; preparations for the children’s Christmas service; and the rest of the story. I surely would have liked to be the resident "church mouse" in the corner observing the activities of the time.

In the process of putting the contents of the floppies on to the flash drives, I re-found a couple filled with what I call "Ideas for the Fish." They are items, mostly short, that have ideas or stories for ideas to write articles or sermons with. I didn’t realize how many I have "tucked away" on the disks over the years. Now I have to get busy and do some writing I think. I did use some for articles I wrote for our church newsletter each month. I think there are a couple hundred files to peruse and then play with the keypads on this machine. One of those rainy day activities - hope it rains!

Today is Bible study. A couple of weeks ago I found some workbooks at church from the previous part of the study. I always try to make a couple extra for people who lose theirs or new folks coming. Last week we had a couple of new folks, back from snow-birding in the south, and discovered that I had thrown the new workbooks away and kept the older ones! I also normally keep a "master" in my briefcase, just in case I need to make more. I had given the master to Bruce at LSM for him to peruse, so didn’t have that either. Last night I remade the master, only to discover that the new printer has different maximum printing areas then the previous printer - smaller. Fortunately, I really checked out the print preview and noticed the difference. The old printer would allow printing to within ¼" of the page bottom and the new one only within ½". While it doesn’t seem like much, it means about an extra half page in length of the workbook. Also messes up the page number location. We will adjust with new work, but it may mess up much of what I have already produced a bit.

Seems like the critters of the area are getting ready for summer. We have had several birds looking over possible nesting sites on and around the house. The night before last, apparently a thrush flew into the sunporch, looking for food or a nesting site. We closed the door and it stayed overnight in the porch. Margriet was startled when she went out yesterday morning. We left the door open and stayed out of the sunporch for a time. It finally found it’s way out again. The robins have also been back for several days along with other birds. The rabbits are out in force looking for a meal, morning and evening. The noise of the frogs also get Margriet’s attention often. Guess she didn’t hear them as much in the Netherlands where she lived. Guess the frog statue in her garden pool didn’t make much noise!

After Bible study we hope to plant some flowers in the bed on the south side of the house. Also hope to change oil and do some other regular maintenance on the van today. The box our new file cabinet came in will provide a new piece of cardboard for me to lay on while doing it. Have to stop at my bank to pick up some money to pay a couple of bills. The date of my rocking chair money arriving at the bank has changed to a week earlier, but I keep forgetting that! We probably will make our supply run to Green Bay tomorrow or the next day. Trying to do as few of those as possible thanx to the high price of gasoline.

Time to get the day a-going.

In Christ My Saviour,

Chris <><
