Get to know your critter day

June 30, 2007 (4:58am)
41º F, Clear, Calm wind.

Good morning,

It looks to be another beautiful day a-coming. We didn’t get frost the morning before last, but it came pretty close to it I think. The weather has been exceptional this week by in large. Not too hot and not too cool during the day. One thing that strikes me here is the lack of wind in the morning at sunrise. We don’t have the lake to cause some wind most of the time.

Thursday must have been get to know your critter day or something. I walked around the corner of the house first thing in the morning and almost stepped on a 3' snake. I was about a surprised as it was, as it headed under the house rather quickly. Didn’t see it again. I didn’t recognize what kind of snake it was. About 1:0 P.M. or a little after, two very small fawns, about the size of a beagle with long legs, walked past the back door about 5' away, followed by their mamma, before retracing their steps and headed back into the woods again. I half dollar would have covered their footprints. Most deer are rather pretty this time of year in their orange coats. Of course the red squirrels are everywhere. They are getting more brazen the longer we are here. Think I am going to have to get a .410 or 29 gauge shotgun to lessen their numbers a bit.

We had a bit of a celebration last night - I finished digging the trench for the LP gas line! It turned out to be much more difficult than it started out to be. Where the sand wasn’t rock hard, there were tree roots to fight with. While the trench is only a foot deep, it was a chore. I hope I can get the line in the ditch and hooked up today. Maybe tonight we can actually take a hot shower! Then I can fill in the trench again. Suspect that will be easier then emptying the ditch out in the first place. The very first thing I bought to put this place in order was the copper line for the LP. Finally, I will get it installed already.

Margriet continues to go through the pile of boxes in the basement of the main house. She says she is making progress and I guess she is. I burned a bunch of empty boxes last night and some other things that are being gotten rid of. At least now we can walk from one end of the basement to the other again. It seems we have enough canning jars to start a grocery store and enough books to open a library. Not only do we each have a lot of books, but we are finding many boxes of them from Mom’s house too. She has commandeered a walk-in closet in the main house and almost filled all of the shelves in it. We are thinking of making the closet into a smaller, more normal closet, but am wondering if we should issue library cards instead at this point. Don’t know where we will put the books if we change it.

Since it was cool on Thursday, Margriet thought it would be a good day to use up some chicken backs accumulating in the freezer and make some soup from them. The result was excellent and we finished the last of it up last night for supper. She really made it a treat for me by making it with the big honking noodles from Mrs. Miller and then put dumplings on top. The soup was almost thick enough to eat with a fork. Talk about your good eating. Almost licked the pan clean!

I thought I would license the van and pickup in Michigan since they expire in Wisconsin today and save the extra cost of having them registered twice. Didn’t work. I have to have proof of Michigan insurance to do that, but since I don’t, can’t. Guess I will have to do the double deal anyway. I didn’t license the pick-up and won’t until I bring it here and then will insure it. I also found the laws for transferring my driver’s license here is more difficult than I thought. They are more strict here than Wisconsin is. That really surprised me. I thought Wisconsin laws were tough, and the are, but these are tougher. The Secretary of State handles the licensing here. That also seems a bit strange compared to what I have been used to. It is a different world up here in more ways than one.

If you are curious or interested in what happens in an around here, the city of Crystal Falls has a pretty good website, http://www.crystalfalls.org/. For a small city, it is very complete and informative, at least for us who live in the area. The big event for the city is the reconstruction of the sewer system, at present down the main drag of the city, and the difficulties that presents. The construction is really going rather quickly, and as one block is finished, the street is paved and opened again. They have started at one end and progress toward the other, rather than tearing up the entire length of the street, as they did in Kewaunee causing several business to go out of business.

There also are two news papers in the area who have websites: Iron Mountain http://www.ironmountaindailynews.com/index.asp and Iron River http://www.ironcountyreporter.com/index.htm. Iron Mountain’s is a much bigger and better site, as they are a much bigger city. Rather complete too. Crystal Falls also has a newspaper, The Crystal View, but is very small, without a website. In fact we have never read it. There really is a lot of stuff going on around here. We are looking forward to learning and participating in some of the events, as soon as we can take shower, that is. Most things are on a rather small scale, much to our liking.

Time to get a-going.

Frost?

June 28, 2007 (7:00am)
49º F, Overcast, N wind, 9 mph.

Good morning,

A bit cooler this morning than it has been for a while. In fact the weatherman is predicting a low tonight of close to the freezing point! Also patches of frost in areas away from the Great Lakes - that’s us. Well, I guess this the U.P. in June. What was I thinking. Yesterday was a relatively cool but very nice day. The sun really beat down for a time and if you were out of the wind, it was really hot. Also was a haven for deer flies too. Mosquitoes are almost nonexistent so far. Hope it stays that way.

Did some digging and metal cutting yesterday. I never knew that sand could become so hard in dry conditions. Most of what I was digging, for the LP line, felt like it was poor concrete. Also are several different colors of sand, from nearly white to a very dark bronze color. The white is the most difficult to dig. Wonder if there is some limestone in it. Then there are the tree roots I hit every once in awhile. At present I have about doubled the length of the trench of what I started with yesterday morning. Still have a bunch to do. As my back and legs got tired, I switched to cutting apart the shelving in the shop. Switched muscle groups to tire them all evenly. Dig awhile, cut awhile, dig awhile, cut awhile, ....

Margriet says she is making progress on getting things organized in the basement. At least there is a path now from one end to the other. She continues to find more and more treasures. Some of the items that are more "male" in nature are heading for the "hired hand’s room" above the shop. Guess she is running out of room and places to walk. We also now have an abundance of empty boxes. Guess the trash burner will be warm for some time. And to think, we really have not started on emptying the house at FISKLAND yet!

The ISP acted really weird last night. Don’t know what happened but the wireless system showed the signal was coming in, but the internet could not be accessed for some reason. The signal would also vary in strength from good to excellent. Not sure if it was within this machine or the service. What ever it was, it was frustrating. The problems started about 6:30 P.M. last night and continued until I finally gave up about 9:30 P.M. and went to bed. Late at that, hence the late get-up this morning.

Just opened the webcam for Enschede ( http://cms3.enschede.nl/toerisme/De_stad/eivanko/ ) and the city square is filled with people, tent boots, cars, tables and chairs, and like that. There is some kind of a shindig going on for sure. A couple of the tents went up a couple of days ago, but overnight, it really exploded. I think Margriet said there was an annual folk dance festival in town. What ever is the reason, it sure got a lot of folk’s attention. Suspect it will be active until Saturday night when everything will come down again. Being now on DSL sure do make a difference in the picture. It looks much more like a TV screen, though not totally, rather than a series of snapshots every 30-4 seconds. Much more pleasant to watch.

In one of the boxes, the items were wrapped in a newspaper from 1962 (guess I didn’t fill that box). It was interesting to read the food prices particularly. Kohl’s grocery store had these bargains - chuck roast = 49¢/#; beef chuck steak = 59¢/#; round bone chuck roast = 59¢/#; fresh broccoli = 29¢/large bunch; automobile seat safety belts = $4.98 (installed free); frozen orange juice = 2 cans for 29¢; 10 oz. frozen peas = 6 pkg./57¢; and like that. Another store, National Tea grocery had - Boson butt pork roast = 35¢/#; boneless rolled pork roast = 45¢/#; cut up chicken = 33¢/#; liver sausage = 49¢/#; large eggs = 2 dz./89¢; butter = 69¢/#; bacon = 99¢/2#; sliced brick cheese = 70¢/#; various Easter candies = 29¢/#; canned tuna = $1.00/6 cans; and the store also gave you S&H Green Stamps with every purchase! I can remember a couple years later being married and finding it almost impossible to pay those "high" prices. When the price of hamburger, about the only meat we bought, went to more than 6# for a dollar, we really struggled. Almost forgotten about the stores giving stamps. That was a big deal then and every grocery store, at least, gave some kind of stamp to attract business. Ah yes! The good old days.

We got an email from our friends in North Dakota this morning with some good news. Don has been released by his doctor and can return to "normal" activities again, including driving ambulances again after the 1st. His heart problems came out of the blue a couple months ago. If he is anything like I am, I’m sure he has been itching to get to things and probably pushed a bit.

Time to get a-going.

Cool now, was hot

June 27, 2007 (5:33am)
61º F, Cloudy, NW wind, 2 mph.

Good morning,

The shower works! Complete with cold running water and cold hot running water. We each took a rinse last night to stop the sweat from flowing and also to cool off a bit. I can report with all confidence, the shower was indeed cold. The leaks in the shower base have also been eliminated. I had picked up a stainless steel drain grate and had to remodel it a bit to fit a 2" drain pipe instead of a 3" drain pipe. It works. I also replaced the relief valve on the hot water heater and will run an drain line from it to the outside of the house. With PEX, that is a bunch easier than the old hard pipe method.

We got a somewhere between ½" to 1" of much needed rain last night. There were storm warnings and watches up until after midnight. I didn’t stay up to watch them come down. Yesterday was a very hot day, temperature well into the 90's. Hope that is it for the year, but I doubt it. Didn’t work too fast or hard yesterday, but did manage to unload the truck and get the contents to the right areas to sort and put away. Or at least put in a different place. Margriet is having a ball going through the "stuff" from Mom’s house. Every once in a while she will find a new treasure and have to show it to me. She does have the luxury of working mostly in the basement of the main house where it is relatively cool.

Margriet has found several boxes of photos and papers of various kinds. Some are very interesting, as I don’t remember ever seeing them before. One is a scrap book of postcards received my Mom’s Mom and Dad. Most are dated 1911 and were sent by Mom’s siblings. Some of the cards are photos of the area in and around Milwaukee, and others are cartoon type cards with some cool pictures and sayings on them. Not much writing in the message area, more of a wish you were here kind of message and then signatures. I want to take some time and really go through them, identify some of the places and compare to what they are now. Bet there are some changes - especially with the lake of horse drawn streetcars/carriages/wagons today!

There also was a box of pictures from Mom’s side of the family mostly. Many of the folks I have no idea who they are at first glance. Also want to spend some time on them. Suspect I will do a lot of scanning and emailing of them to try and figure out who/what/where the are. There are some old ones from Dad’s kid days too. I think one at least is a class picture of someone in his family, but the names on the back are only half written in ink and the other half in pencil. Can’t read the pencil names and don’t recognize any of those in ink. I might be able to enhance them with the scanner, but that will have to wait until I get the scanner here and set up.

A couple very useful things we brought up were a couple of fans. One is a 20" box fan, I had forgotten about, which fits perfectly into one of the windows in the gathering room in the Hobbit Hus. Set it up late yesterday afternoon and it really brings in the air. Very comfortable - comparatively speaking, with it operating. The other fan is an oscillating fan that we also put to good use. Noticed the box fan literally pressurizes this little house, causing the air to flow out of the rest of the windows. Like that as we will find a way to put it in a window on the coolest side of the house and blow the hot air out another place or two.

I found out yesterday that I really have to get my shop some organized. I can’t figure out which box has which tool in it! I looked for an end nippers yesterday for 45 minutes and never did find it. I know it is here, but where? Hope I can get the shelving I am cutting up done soon, so I can start remodeling workbenches and start building some adequate shelving and tool boards. In my perusing yesterday, I did find 10 pieces of 1¼"x3" rectangular tubing about 5+’ long, now being used to hold up plywood shelving in the lean-to. They will be perfect for making legs for the work benches! Was trying to figure out what to use, now solved. Bet I find other very useable iron around here. After I get the present cut up project completed, I will pull the existing "work bench" out of it’s cave and rework it into something more useful. Probably will start building some shelving into the cave once the bench is out of it. Sure do need it!

Major project for today is working on getting the LP gas line to the Hobbit Hus, paying some bills, and taking down the old, milk house piping strung form one end of this house to the other and used as the water supply line. It is ugly and bothers me every time I look at it. Should be a bit cooler, so should be able to do some digging.

Time to get a-going.

Hot and then some!

June 26, 2007 (5:15am)
68º F, Clear, S wind, 3 mph.

Good morning,

We arrived at Guds Nordtre in the early afternoon and found everything high - temperature and gas prices. The temperature was in the 90's and rose as the afternoon went on. Inside of the Hobbit Hus was fairly cool, but it too warmed to almost unbearable before the sun set and things started to cool some. It is hot this morning for the time of day. Supposed to be hotter and humid-er today! Oh goodie.

The price of gasoline is higher here than in Kewaunee too - $3.049/gallon as apposed to $3.299/gallon in Spread Eagle. It is $3.099 here. The tax rate is much lower in Michigan than Wisconsin, so am some surprised by the higher price here for the past few months. In the past it was 10-15¢/gallon less here. Guess it is trying to keep up with the price of food here.

We came up by way of Iron Mountain this time. Stopped at our ISP to pay for the next months service. We get about a 15% discount that way. Also wanted to ask how to set up Margriet’s computer on the wireless, but the tech wants me to be at the computer and talk to him on the phone while he troubleshoots the situation. When we got home, my head was not working very well anymore, so will make the call today. I suspect we will need a card added to the computer so it will talk to the wireless connection. A few more dollars spent.

On the ride up, we stopped at the buffet in Iron Mountain for a late lunch. I was trying to stay awake for the hour or more before the stop for some reason. Haven’t done that for a long time. Don’t know what the reason was, but sure don’t like the feeling. The food was good as usual (not as good at the Old Country Buffet in Green Bay though), but Margriet wasn’t hungry, so didn’t eat much. We had picked up a couple of sweet rolls from the German bakery in Kewaunee as we left. She wished she had not gotten two for herself!

One of the things we brought up was the printer for the computer. It arrived safely, but I forgot to pack any paper! Have to go to Crystal Falls and get some this morning. Must be age that caused the forgetfulness. Sure do feel dumb though. Will be nice to have the ability to print things out here. Especially paying of the bills and like that.

There was a letter from my friend in jail yesterday. Dan is feeling very much down in the dumps and will not find out his fate until August, the end of the month I think. He has been incarcerated for 20 weeks now and it is really getting to him. He has done some serious things and I fear he will be there for long time to come. We are praying and hoping that is not the case, but it is up to the judge. From what I know of Dan, I really think he has learned a great deal from this. We continue to pray.

Margriet is planning to make the ingredients for our main meal this morning while it still is cool. She plans to make a Russian egg for supper. No idea why it is called that, but it is a kind of potato salad that is very good. She made it a few times last summer too. This little house doesn’t have a decent air flow pattern to bring in fresh air yet, so we have to plan some of our activities around the thermometer somewhat. Sure am glad I put in the small fans we used for moving the hot air from the wood stove around the house at FISKLAND. They have been a huge help. The ceiling fan also is a good thing too.

Time to get a-going.

Celebration - a good thing

June 25, 2007 (5:27am)
57º F, Hazy, Calm wind.

Good morning,

We bid Tom, our choir director fair well in good style last night. He and his wife, Roberta, were totally surprised. Helen and Don had invited them for dinner and a quiet night of reflection of their times together. Then the rest of started to come bearing "dishes to pass." We are sad to see them leave, but have been so blessed with Tom’s ministry and talents. He is a rare gem. We also had some very good food along the way. But the fellowship was better. Lots of "remember when’s" and like that during the time there.

We also had a part of the church service devoted to saying goodbye to Tom and his family. Of course Tom had some words to say and he played/sand one of the songs he wrote at the end of the service. Hope to get the words and music for it. Would be nice if he had it on a CD or some such. Tom has written several pieces, but has not put them into a form for others to enjoy, other than he performs. He had a very long, standing ovation during the service.

They have bought a new house and will be living just west of Kenosha from the sound of it. The company he is working for is located near Chicago I think. He has a drive of about 50 miles to work (for the past few years his commute has been about 100 miles), but doesn’t have to show up at the office everyday. It sounds like he is an outside salesman, traveling to customers rather than the customers traveling to the dealer. He will be selling Ford and Sterling medium and heavy trucks. He was doing that in Green Bay when I first met him and has for most of the time since, in various places.

Don got out his "Spud Gun" (cannon made from PVC pipe, using potatoes as ammunition, using spray can propellent as the explosive charge) and all who had not seen or experienced it before, had a ball. It will fire a potato a hundred yards or so. From the sound of it, Don has regular "contests" with his friends and relatives, trying for distance and also trying to shoot down kites or airborne balloons. Guess you can tell the size of the boys by the size of their toys! It was fun to watch the folks participate and have some, just plain, clean , simple fun. I fear most folks don’t participate in those activities often enough.

I had promised pastor some lumber a few years ago and finally delivered it last night as long as he and we were at Helen and Don’s. It got pushed to the back of the storage unit rather than the front, so took until now to get near it. The storage unit is very bare, with just a few things in it at present. Next time here it will be empty. That will be the first time in many years. Glad to see that happen.

The truck is about half loaded at the moment, but it will be filled before we leave this morning. There still is much to move. The rest of the load will probably be tool type stuff and probably the computer printer at least. I am dreading the bringing of this desk up, as it is a heavy monster. We don’t have a place to put it yet, so can put it off for a while. There are also several other heavy items that need to go too. I am in the process of figuring out a lift of some sort to get them into and out of the truck. I also discovered the rear door is a bit narrower than I thought. Finally measured it. Not sure everything will fit through it without some disassembly. Some how, it will all get there. One of the cube vans had a lift tailgate. Would be nice to have now, but the extra $6,000.00 was a bit much for the van. Think I can accomplish the task for some less.

Margriet did get the laundry done and dried while here. Now I will have clean shorts again. She also got some more things packed to go. When she was preparing the pasties to take to the potluck, she discovered she didn’t have any gravy/sauce mix here, so I suggested she use a can of mushroom soup instead. Didn’t have any of that either. When she did get something mixed up, she was going to add mushrooms to it and found there were none on the cupboard shelf either! Eventually something did get put together to take along, but with some frustration and chuckles too.

Seems there is not enough time to get it all done. Sure glad we don’t have a time line to meet. The next addition to this should be from Guds Nordtre. Time to get a-going.

In Christ My Saviour,

Plumb wet!

June 23, 2007 (5:14pm)
75º F, Sunshine, SSW wind, 4 mpg.
Good afternoon,

We are back in Kewaunee after a very short stay at Guds Nordtre. We are having some special doings for our choir director tomorrow, as it will be his last "official" Sunday at Grace. I am going to try and convince Helen to lead the Bible study on Tuesday, so we can return up nort’ afer only a short stay here. There is much to do there and we really would like to get at the plans we had when we bought the place almost a month and a half ago.

A rather uneventful trip today and we really made good time, until we got to Green Bay. Then it was a stop for a very late lunch at The Old Country Buffet and some shopping for the next trip up nort’. The idea is to pick things up before we fill the truck with a load from here. It also means a more direct and faster trip on the return. We skirt by Green Bay and save a bunch of time, even though I really don’t like to drive on the super slab. We do get a really nice view of the Green Bay harbor and surrounding area by going up and over the high rise bridge over the Fox River. Would be nice if there were a turnout at the top to take pictures from. They frown on stopping or walking on the bridge. It is about a mile long including the approaches.

The Hobbit Hus is plumb done wet! Finally got the last of the piping plumbed last night. Now Margriet can wash dishes with cold hot water as well as take a shower with the same cold hot water. Everything works and no leaks found. The shower has a new personal showerhead on too. The new kitchen faucet also works without any by-passing of water from one side to the other. All, well almost all, of the piping is nice and straight, square, and red. That is much more pleasant to look at then the old, every which-a-way PVC with purple streaks, not to mention all of the leaks and breaks. The drain in the shower is now solid and doesn’t leak. I do need to put on the grate which needs a bit of remodeling to make it fit right. Another item is the pressure relief valve on the hot water heater needs to be replaced as it also leaks. The last item is replacing the toilet, but this will be postponed for a bit.

The next major project is to finish putting in the LP gas line from the bulk tank to the Hobbit Hus. That project took a back seat to the water problems for a time. We will finally be able to take a hot shower instead of spit baths! I also have to finish the shutoff valve for the old water supply and then re-bury the shutoff and access to it. While it is not a hard project, it will be one that takes a bit of physical work and some time. At least I will be working in sand rather than clay. Do have to be a bit careful as the power supply for the Hobbit Hus in buried in the same trench. The power will be off for much of the work.

Most mornings, before Margriet gets up in the morning, I work on taking apart the "shelves" in the shop built by Leo, the former owner. The angle grinder is sure getting a workout. One box of grinding wheels must have gotten wet at some point, really soaked. One of them wore out extremely fast and finally came apart like cornflakes. Not too happy about that. I now have a 5' ladder made from ½"x1¼" bar stock and small channel. It is heavy as sin, but will last of ever. It was used as support for on side of a stack of bins welded to it. I have 6 - 16"x32" bins about 4" deep with pretty substantial handles at each end. They appear to be originally hung on a rack with a finger at each end. They are in pretty good shape, so will reused them as drawers in the storage part of the shop - I think. There are also 5-6 more in the lean-to, also in good shape, but bolted in place. Will add them to the others.

We took Margriet’s computer up this trip. Thought it could hooked to the wireless very easily. I think it can be, but I just don’t know the combination. It will eventually get connected. We sure have gotten spoiled by the DSL though. I get very impatient here, waiting for the dial-up to catch up. There is so much added value to this machine and system with DSL. Too bad they still have barb-wire for phone lines here. I still can’t get over needing to go up nort’ in the big woods to get vastly improved service that isn’t available here. Here the response is that there are not enough people per square mile to make it pay. They certainly have fewer folks there than here, and it must be profitable or it would not be there.

The cookies were a hit with the folks a the realty office. Everyone was pleased to see us, but I’m not sure if it was because we were bringing cookies! They had asked if we would have our picture taken for an article in the local paper about our moving into the neighborhood. Tried to tell them they just needed to get our picture from the "Most Wanted" at the post office. They didn’t buy it. We did have a good chat with them and generally had a good time. They are a bunch.

Time to get a-going.

In Christ My Saviour,

Up again.

June 20, 2007 (5:51am)
51º F, Cool, W wind, 1 mph.

Good morning,

Sure feels cool this morning. Like that mostly. Yesterday was a really nice cool and windy day. Very welcome after the hot and humid weather of the past few days. Supposed to heat up again on the weekend. We had some pretty good rain Sunday evening and night. It started with a shower of raindrops about the size of golf balls. They really splatted when landing. In all we got about ¾"-1" of rain. Much needed for the farmers here. There was some wind with it, but no real damage here. Other places were not so lucky.

So the truck is once again loaded for the trip up nort’ this morning. The storage unit is looking pretty empty now. Has been many years since it has been that empty. I think we have most of the boxes out of it and only some pieces of furniture and like that left in it. There is still a house full here, even though we have been boxing up and moving out from here too. It will be a short trip this time. We want to be back for church on Sunday and will leave again right after Bible study on Tuesday. Would like to stay there for a longer time and finish up some of the work there, before returning, but it ain’t in the cards this time.

We learned Sunday that our choir director will be leaving on next Sunday. There will be something special during the service and one of the gals is hosting a "surprise" potluck dinner for Tom and his family. They know they are coming for dinner, but don’t know a bunch of other folks will be showing up too. Tom has really grown, musically and spiritually since I met him when we came here. After losing his job in Milwaukee/Madison, he has found another in northern Illinois area. I think they had just bought a home in Milwaukee, thinking they would be moving there for his former job. Talked to him for about 30 seconds after church and it seems like things are falling into place for them. Grace will miss him and his family. We will too, especially me.

Bible study went rather well yesterday. I crossed the folks up a bit by really getting them to do some written work and thinking. It seemed strange to hear silence for a while as they worked. The showing up on Tuesday’s is getting harder and harder as time goes on. Helen is really fighting our not showing up. She is a busy gal, especially at this time of year with a lot of relatives coming and her going to see them.

We gave a written and oral report to the council of the Assembly last night. Margriet’s first experience with that and added some material I had not remembered. It was an interesting time, since I have not been to a council meeting for a while. It is a good thing I am not on council any longer. There are now two gals also with the name Chris now council members. Three would be just too many. One of the Chris’ just was married and now both Chris’ have a last name starting with K to add to the confusion.

We did get to Green Bay on Saturday. Fleet had the scaffolding on sale at 10% off, so picked up the rest of what I need. Saving a buck will buy another board or two. We also picked up a string grass trimmer. It is much easier to tackle the jungle here with it than a lawnmower, which doesn’t do a good job at all. This thing was on sale too, so got a better model than intended to. Happens to be a Husky, which I am some familiar with the company and trust their products. It really works pretty well too! We stopped to pick up some ink for the printer and Margriet started to drool over some of the new laptops on sale. They sure have come a long way in the past few years. Almost makes this one old fashioned! I did pick up a headset with a microphone so we can experiment with internet telephone a bit. That will have to wait until we get up nort’ and DSL though. Hope to get that working.

Margriet managed to bake a batch of cookies. The idea is to bring some of them to the gang at the realtor office we bought Guds Nordtre through. They really are a good bunch and we have to keep them some fat! Of course I had to check the quality of them, so she made a bunch of them a bit larger for me. The are tolerable.

Time to get a-going.

Hot and humid

June 16, 2007 (5:09am)
65º F, Humid and cloudy, South wind, 1 mph.

Good morning,

Hot, humid, and rain a-coming. Think this is the warmest start to a day this season. Probably will be more before the snow flies again. It feels like rain and that is what is forecast for today and the next couple days. We plan to go to Green Bay to pick up some things for up nort’. A couple of the items are fairly large items, like scaffolding. Hope the rain holds off until it is in the truck.

The celebration of Millie’s life was nice last night. About 40-50 family and friends were there and we had a good time sharing our experiences with Millie. There were tears and much laughter. I worked hard at also having some laughter, but it really wasn’t necessary. Millie was always laughing and smiling, so most of the shared stories were happy ones. I hoped my part helped some. She originally was from Illinois outside of Chicago, so will be buried there next to her husband.

Margriet spent most of the day baking bread and I spent a lot less time eating some of it. Really good again - of course. It really wasn’t the best day to bake, since it was so hot and humid, but we both like the results! Of course the hot weather also helped the bread to rise and it sure smelled like sourdough in here all day long - until the smell of baking bread over took it. Either way it was a good day of smells around here. Not only that, but she baked some country style ribs for supper. That ain’t a bad smell either. We had an excellent supper of homemade wheat bread and honey/mustard country ribs.

The washing machine also ran for most of the day. Lots of clothing and bedding to be cleaned and now is. When I left last time, I thought I left a pair of "good" jeans here to wear. Turned out they were a pair of work jeans and I didn’t notice it until the pair I wore down were in the washer. Ended up wearing the work jeans uptown to do some errands, &c. At least they were clean.

I did get caught up on some of the accumulated paperwork here, especially after sifting though the accumulated mail. AT&T’s bill was most humorous that arrived. Well, not really. Last month we got a notice that we were over a hundred dollar in arrears on the account. This month’s indicated we were well over a hundred dollars credit and they had not credited the check we sent in last month! We only paid the current month’s bill, but it wasn’t credited. As long as it is showing a credit, at least we will not get cut off. What a mess. If any Mom and Pop shop did something similar, they would be out of business in a hurry.

The fuel prices are dropping here. Lower than in Green Bay from what I can tell. $3.029/gallon yesterday uptown. The state apparently has done an investigation into the price and found that the wholesale price has increased by 6+% since last June, while the pump price has increased by34+%! There is a whole big snag of folks very grumpy about that report. Someone figured out that with the 6% increase, the price should not have been higher than $2.899/gallon this past year. Ouch! My pocketbook hurts! I grumpy too! I do hope something is done, but it probably will not refund any money back into my pocketbook.

So our schedule for today is to head to the big city before the rains start. Once home I need to finish the Bible study for Tuesday and a report to Council regarding the Assembly. Both of us will be at the meeting, so will be heading back up nort’ later than usual. Also need to get more packing done. Should be something we can do while it rains outside. There is a lot to box up yet. Probably will be taking a lot of heavy stuff up this time.
I am including a couple of pictures of the shop area. The first is of the storage bins I am taking apart to salvage the iron from. There are 24 large bins here and a bunch more in the lean-to. In total I have about 75 of them. I really don’t know what I will do with the bins, at least all of them. All are in need of sandblasting and paint. Some are in pretty tough shape. The space where they stand will become the machine area for the shop.

The second picture is of the workbench left behind. It too is made of a lot of iron. I will disassemble it and use the various pieces to make a bench with a metal top as it now has, but poorly put together and designed. The new bench will be taken out of the "cave" it is now in under the stairway and assembled on the left wall of the first picture. Also will put some windows in the left, west, wall too. Plan to use a lot less black paint as well. Don’t need to feel like I am in a cave.

Time to get a-going.

Back at FISKALND again

June 15, 2007 (4:47am)
57º F, Clear, Calm wind, 0 mph.

Good morning,

We got back to FISKLAND a bit after 4:00 P.M. yesterday. It seemed like a long day. One thing FISKLAND has that Guds Nordtre doesn’t is mosquitoes! While they are not as bad as the last time here, they are infinitely worse that up nort’. Don’t know if it is the drier conditions thanx to the sandy soil or what, but it is much more comfortable for Margriet. One thing that Guds Nordtre has that FISKLAND doesn’t is DSL! Didn’t think it would be that soon we would become spoiled by that. From what I can tell is the DSL is about 7 times faster than the land line here. Now to get the rest of our system up there and operating. Someday.

There were several emails waiting for me concerning the funeral for Millie when we arrived. Some to the account up nort’ and some here. Pastor is on vacation, so there is some confusion. With our being up north and in transit to here, didn’t help any either. I really am not too sure what is going on, as I have not been able to make any contact with the pastor who is covering for our pastor. The email address for Pastor Kohl which Jeff gave me was incorrect and my messages to him bounced. Jeff, Millie’s son, is getting very frustrated from the tone of his last email, saying he was tired of making decisions and wanted someone else to make them. Know how he feels - been there, did that.

We stopped at the Amish store on the way down. That required us to take the long way here, through Shawano. We loaded upon some of the basic supplies that seem to run out faster than we would like. Also had to pick up some sweets to take to Bible study on Tuesday, as is a custom that seems to have developed. I also picked up a pocket watch for less than $8.00. The last one I really used the kids gave to me for my birthday many years ago, but it died and the cost of repair was about double the cost of a new one. I have picked up a couple since, but they are so thick that the fill the watch pockets on jeans too much, making them too big for the pocket. Guess the pockets have gotten smaller. This one is very slim and works well in the pocket.

Before the store it was time to eat something, so stopped at the Perkins in Shawano. Usually don’t stop there as the prices are a bit higher than we like. We were some surprised as the portion size has increased, even for the "Senior Menu" we normally choose from. The prices seemed to be less than the last stop also. Food was good and Margriet could not finish her’s and I was too full to help her clean her plate. The strawberry pie looked really good, but we passed on it. The restaurant we normally stop at is downtown, but I didn’t want to try and park the truck there. Never tried parallel parking the truck and didn’t think yesterday was the time to start.

We cut "across lots" yesterday through Alpha to come here yesterday. I had noticed a gas station in Caspian with the lowest price in the area. Since we didn’t have enough in the tank to get here without walking, we stopped and put some in at $3.279/gallon, the cheapest we have seen for sometime. As we drove through the Indian Reservation, the price was $3.019/gallon! Never fails. The price here is $3.049/gallon, but we didn’t have enough to get here without the addition. At least the price is heading in the right direction. Now if they drop the first digit, it would be much better at $.999/gallon. Only a dream I am afraid.

We will not be heading back to Guds Nordtre until Wednesday morning at the earliest. Didn’t plan to come here this soon (or to stay up there this long when we went), more like Monday morning, but can’t get out of a Church Council meeting on Tuesday evening. I could have gotten Helen to lead the Bible study, but now will lead that too. Suppose I had better finish the worksheet too!

Sounds like my brother Bill and his wife Mary, are heading to the northwestern part of the state to visit relatives there, then head south along the more or less western half of the state visiting relatives and friends. They put my cousin Janet on the plane back home to Cedartown, Georgia again on Tuesday. It sure was good to see her, even for such a short time. She promised to write and we will do the same. Sure do wish she had a computer. Would make things a lot more convenient.

The shower sure felt good last night. Since we don’t have hot water in the Hobbit Hus or the main house yet, it would mean either a cold shower or what we do is a pits and possible spit bath often with some water heated in the coffee maker! Margriet heats her dishwashing water in the big electric frypan. Got to do, what you got to do! While it ain’t perfect, we get by. As soon as we walked in the door, the washing machine was also put in service. She does wash a couple of things out in cold water everyday up nort’, but it ain’t like doing a big wash of sheets, towels, and like that.

Lots to do today, so .... Time to get a-going.

In Christ My Saviour,

See what I have been messing with

June 14, 2007 (5:32am)
55º F, Clear and nice, NNW wind, 3 mph.

Good morning,

Today we will be heading back to Kewaunee again. Had not really planned on going yet, but a good friend has died and her son asked me to be part of the service for her. We are very honored to be asked and certainly will do it. Pastor is on vacation, so I guess the family will be having an open house rather than a formal funeral. Not sure if there will be one later, after pastor is back next week.

If we can get out of here early enough, we plan to go by way of the Amish store and pick up supplies. One thing for sure, we will bring back as much eatables as we can from almost anywhere than here. Ice chest will be full I think. Plan to stop at Aldi’s and Woodman’s, probably coming and going, for sure. The next problem will be finding a place to store what we bring. Glad that isn’t my job, but Margriet’s.

I did finish all of the plumbing, other than connecting some of the pipes. I want to pick up some "sweep" Ells to use in a couple of places. They have a more gentle curve, rather than a sharp right-angled corner to them. They make for easier placement of the pipe in some of the corners where there are trim pieces. The hardest task was to make up an "overpass" for the cold water line to the shower to cross the hot water line to the kitchen sink. Lots of Ells used and time doing putzy work. Don’t want to change the kitchen faucet and toilet until I can spend some uninterrupted time on them. I did get the drain in the shower sealed up I think and need to find a grate to go over the opening. Might need to make one.

Thought you might like to see what I have been working on for the past few days in the plumbing department. The first picture is of the cold water manifold and supply just sticking out behind the right side of the toilet. It was a real challenge to fit the PEX behind the water heater. Had to move it, but could only move it about 4" away from the wall. Everything done there required much effort and all hand tools. As it is, the hot water supply line shut off is stuck behind the water heater, accessible, but just. Yes the electrical supply is on my agenda to replace soon too, as is the toilet. Have a new load center, main lug, and toilet sitting here and waiting to be installed.

The second picture is of the hot water manifold above the hot water heater. This was much easier to work on, other than there were a few sweat joints to make. Had to dust of the soldering skills again that I haven’t used for a time. The real difficult part started where the hot and cold water lines merged into the shower and the kitchen faucet beyond.

I can’t believe how many Ells I have used, especially ½"! The rolls of PEX I bought are also partially depleted, especially the ½". Don’t think there is more than 25' of that left. That is about twice the amount I planned on. Those short little pieces sure add up. So does the cost. Lots of Ells to connect them too. Of course, we really didn’t plan to even do this project either, but was necessary.

Time to get a-going.

Sunny, clear, and calm

June 13, 2007 (5:01am)
47º F, Sun and clear, N wind, 0 mph.

Good morning,

Another gorgeous day a-coming at Guds Nordtre! Yesterday was some hot, 86º F/30º C for an official high. Really was nice with a light breeze all day. If one had to be in the sun, it really was hot though. I couldn’t take it for very long. Was better in the shade or in the shop. I tired to stay out of the direct sun as much as possible. It was warmer here than in Kewaunee - thought things were to be a bit cooler up here? Or is that only in the winter?

I have been reading some of my Mom’s diaries off and on. Not too sure what year this one was written, but Dad is going to college at Oshkosh State Teachers College at the time. It really is interesting. Both seemed to have their world’s centered on the other, even then. They each wrote everyday to each other and Mom would get "special delivery" letters and occasionally telegrams from Dad. At the time, there were two mail deliveries each day and often there would be a letter from Dad in each delivery. He also drove to Milwaukee almost every weekend in his "Lizzy" to see her. Some of the rides were not too nice in snow storms. The trip from Oshkosh to Milwaukee now takes about 1½ or so, but some of Dad’s rides took several more hours than that. It was also interesting that during the week she would go to be between 10:00 and 11:00 P.M., but when Dad was in town it was more between 1:00 and 2:00 P.M. Not too sure what the difference was. They sure were enamored with each other! Ain’t that the was it is supposed to be?

One of the more interesting-er things in the diary is Dad applied for and got a substitute teaching job at North Milwaukee High School, teaching shop. Years later, we would live in a house across the street from the school and Bill and I were students there. We took shop in the same classroom as Dad taught in. Our instructor was one of Dad’s roommates while he was in college! Small world. When I started going to the school it was then, and for many years, part of the Milwaukee School System and renamed Custer High School. Later, a new Custer High School was built and the old school became Edison Junior High School as it remains today.

Another item is Mom mentioning over and over her working on "our picture" many hours. Finally figured out she was embroidering some kind of a picture to hang on the wall, apparently after they got married. Right now, I have no idea what that picture is. I can’t remember it at all, but probably have seen it. At one point she said she was half finished and had spent 147 hours on it to get that far! Seems like a lot of sticking and poking to me! Don’t think I would have the patience for that at all.

We did get a couple of things accomplished here yesterday. Finishing the water-works wasn’t one of them though. We did go to the friendly Ace Hardware store and exchange the kitchen faucet for one that has all of the necessary threads to attach all of the pipes. The gal at check-out got a chuckle from the incomplete one. I made sure the new one had the threads on it before taking it. While I was looking for a couple of fittings for the shower and a possible purchase of a hand shower, Margriet noticed a "utility" shower head which included the mixing valve and head riser. We bought it and it solves the problem of mounting on the shower. We now have an extra mixing valve since I apparently threw the box away and can’t return it. Might need one someday, ya never know.

I also repaired an electric frying pan that I got for a wedding present in 1964. Somehow the screws for the handles/feet have been lost. For what ever reason, the pan’s exterior had not been properly cleaned for many years and the baked on grease and crud got to me a bit before Margriet came. I spent a number of hours trying to clean it and didn’t even finish half of it. Margriet decided she would like to use it, so tried to put it back together again. Couldn’t find the screws by then of course. Finally picked up the necessary items yesterday and today she can use it if she wishes. Now she has her choice of two electric frypans to use - on big and one smaller.

We had an email from one of the members at Grace telling us that his Mom had died during the night. Millie was one of the first people we got to know at Grace (as almost every new member or visitor did) and she was one of the early members of the Tuesday Morning Bible study group. For the past several years her health was declining and finally had to stay at a nursing home. The last couple of years Alzheimer’s disease set in and she was in a world of her own. She is one of the real Saints. Now in the home of Saints. Every church has a Grandma, and Millie was Grace’s for sure.

Time to get a-going.

In Christ My Saviour,

First Part

June 7, 2007 (5:35am)
54º F, High clouds, No wind.

Good morning,

Back again for another time. Arrived here about 3:15 P.M., making better time than I thought we would. The stretch of I-43 between Manitowoc and Green Bay ain’t one of the better road surfaces on the I-system. Still we averaged 62 mph for an 1½ from Manitowoc until we ran out of the interstate type road north of Coleman.

We had a very nice lunch with Bill, Mary, and my cousin Janet. There was so much to talk about that at time the conversation got some convoluted! I think all of have hearing problems of one kind of another which didn’t help either. There is no way that we could possible catch up on everything that happened since seeing each other, especially Janet. Janet lived up in the UP many years ago, but a lot farther north, so we had some notes to compare. They all were curious to find out where exactly we were on the map and had lots of questions. Janet said what she could remember most of her stay up here was - so much snow and so cold. Of course those are two things I really like!

Seems it was a gift exchanging time too. Bill and Mary brought presents for house warming, Margriet’s birthday, and our anniversary. There were instructions on the last two not to open until the appropriate days. Shucks! I put them up high on a shelf so Margriet would not be tempted. Our house warming gift is a "do-it-yourself" planting potted plant kit. I am sure it will be planted today and are expecting flowers tomorrow. Also included was the largest bag of the smallest jellybeans I have ever seen. Those we have sampled. If we ate one a day and had to finish them by the time we could see them, it would be five years down the road! Probably will be gone before we see them again, but just barely.

I had forgotten how short Janet was. During the requisite picture taking session, at one point I was between Janet and Margriet. Felt like I was between two very short bookends. Janet is a couple inches shorter than Margriet is! Bill got a new video camera, so of course had to play with it too. The waitress (super nice) also took a couple of pictures of us at the table too. Hope we didn’t break too many cameras.

We could not have picked a better restaurant to eat at. They had gotten there earlier than we, so were sitting in the waiting area, while the restaurant folks set a table for us. The food was great and plentiful. None of us could finish what was set before us. Mary had Swedish meatballs and noodles, I had liver and onions, and the rest had porkchop, kraut, and a dumpling. Janet took about half of her porkchop with her. She should have a pretty good sandwich with the fresh bread we gave her. My meal also came with a dessert that I passed on (ever hear of that happening before?). We had eaten there several times in the past and always found it very good, and easy to find.

Our start was a bit late yesterday. I tried to contact the phone company here (Michigan AT&T) to cancel an appointment for a service tech to come out and correct the connection here. After going through the very long wait of the automated answering service before, I thought I would try just staying on the line and waiting. Low and behold, it wasn’t long before an actual operator came on the line! The idea is that you fool the system into thinking you have an old rotary dial rather than the normal touch dial system. It worked! I got to the point of actually talking to a costumer server operator - and got put on hold because of a backlog. The message was that a wait of about 10 minutes was required before I would be taken care of. After 30 minutes and another message about another 10 minutes, I hung up. Next I tried to contact them via the internet, but the only way to get through is to have an account number from a bill, the last payment made amount, or the present balance due on the account. Since it is a very new account, I have none of them so could not complete the process! Grumpy!

After arriving here, I again tried and in the process, found an 800 number one of the gals had given me the last time I talked at them. I tried it and got right through without all of the hassle. Un-grumpy. The service call was cancelled! Un-grumpier! My little brother suggested that I try using a cordless phone. One was left here by the previous owner so I tried it - works! So for the moment, we have the cordless phone handset here and the base in the other house. When we go over there to work, we will take the handset along and put it on the charger. We failed to pick-up some underground phone wire when we stopped and just might forget it for the time being or at least until we get things sorted out more here.

The earlier start was intended so we could stop both at Maynard’s and Fleet Farm in Manitowoc. We were able to stop at Fleet, originally to pick up another level of stagging. They didn’t have any in stock, but did pick up a set of wheels. While there, I looked at their storm doors and found one on sale for $20.00 less than Maynard’s who was the least expensive I had seen previously. Besides it also was a better brand. So instead of fitting stagging into the truck, a door went in. The bottom of the door was against the bottom of the truck doors, while the top was angled up resting on a bed headboard a bit farther to the front. If someone had opened the truck doors without knowing what they were doing, they would have been cut off at about the kneecaps! Installing the door is not the top priority, but right up there.

We did stop at Maynard’s after leaving the restaurant. It is on the intersection we take to head north. Needed to pick up some PEX supplies. I was surprised at the small quantities and smaller selection this store had for fittings and other PEX supplies. The smaller quantities mean higher prices per item - like that less. I did manage to pick up what I needed though. Also picked up a two wheeled hand cart. It is a long walk carrying boxes for Margriet from the Hobbit Hus to the main house basement entrance. Would really not be too attractive for her knuckles to drag on the ground as she walks. I think I might also find uses for it too.

Margriet and I have come to the conclusion that after driving for a couple of hours we need to get out and walk around a bit. Get the wiggles out. Well at least m knees and hips start to talk to me. In the past on the way here we have not, but wished we had once we arrived. I spotted a sign to 12 Foot Falls County Park near Beecher, so decided to see what was there. After driving 2-3 miles we came upon another sign indicating it was another 3 miles farther. Turned around and headed back to the highway, stopping at an intersection to complete a Chinese fire drill (walk around the truck a half dozen times). After turning west on U.S. 8, we discovered that the road came out onto it a couple of miles down the road. Could have done it without much added distance. Will remember it next time. Along the road to the falls, I saw a doe go into the woods, followed by a fawn. There probably was a second fawn, but I didn’t see it. The fawn was probably about a month old, very small and in spots. It dropped like a sack of potatoes, so I would not see it. Margriet didn’t see either as it happened so quickly. Cool! The hawks and crows sure were having a rough day yesterday. Everyone we saw as being harassed by red-wing black birds and other birds. There were a lot of them.

As we brought the truck to a stop here, a few rain drops started to fall. While unloading the essentials, the number of drops increased. We had several rain showers into the night. No storms or the like, just a nice soaking rain. This morning it is some overcast, but looks like it will be a mostly sunny day. Good thing, since there is a lot to unload from the truck before anything else happens. Then we can get to work on this place again.

June 8, 2007 (5:26am)
63º F, Overcast, Strong NNW wind.

Good morning,

We had tornado warnings and watches up for most of the night, but most of the action was to our east and along the lake shore. Not much here but a few drops of rain, not even enough to settle the dust. The wind is up this morning and at a pretty good clip. Don’t have the internet yet, so can’t tell you what the official wind speed is. From the looks of it, we will get some rain today.

The truck is unloaded (Whew!) That task took a good portion of the day. And now comes the task of trying to find a place for everything. Margriet is finding treasures in almost every box. Bringing back lots of memories for me too. One problem is that we want to use so many of the contents, but we just don’t have room for it here. At least for now. Some of the really good things are the books. Found one that Dad must have bought when I was about a year old (at least that is what the date stamp indicates he added as was his habit for most things he purchased) titled "Deep River Jim’s Wilderness Trail Book" written in 1937. I can remember reading it when I was a kid. Apparently they used it while camping in Chetek, as there are several recipes marked with Mom’s underlined "E" on several of them. There is one that has a note indicating that "Dad" liked one in particular - fry toast as I used to call it when I made it for the kids when they were young. I think the first couple of years camping in Chetek, they used an open fire to do most of the cooking on. At least I have seen a couple of pictures indicating that. The book would have been rather useful for Mom especially since she was a city dude to start her life with Dad.

We made some progress and some un-progress, after the truck was emptied, yesterday. With the extremely humid weather yesterday, we discovered the basement of the main house needs a dehumidifier and very soon. I could not believe the condensation there. We took a ride over to our favorite Ace hardware store in Iron River to pick one up - until we saw the price. Could not believe the numbers they had stuck on each box! Sure do wish I could have sold them for that price when I had the store! Wow! Think we will take a ride to Iron Mountain today as see if we can save $50.00 or so dollars at least. One thing about the high price, they were a lot prettier than those I sold!

We did not go away empty handed from the hardware store though. Picked up a new toilet for about $25-35 less than anywhere else we have seen. It also comes with all of the necessary parts and accouterments needed to install it, where the higher priced toilets at other stores didn’t. That saved a couple of bucks too. Yesterday we found the present toilet, besides having a hairline crack, also sweats profusely in the humid weather. It must be a rather old one not to have insulation in the tank. It will be installed fairly soon.

Another thing we picked up was a two handset portable telephone. It was about the same price as the "normal" portable phones also on the shelf with many added features we probably will not use. It does have an answering machine built in which we probably will use, but the caller I.D. and the other stuff we won’t use. The suggestion to have this kind of phone came from my brother and it turned out to be a good one that works here for us. I took out the old phone that was in this house and all of the wiring associated with it. Got too many wires and pipes running on the wall surfaces - don’t need no more that don’t work to look at!

I called the internet folks yesterday to find out their schedule for coming here to set up our service. Since we would not be here early in the week, the soonest they could come out would be a week from today. Had hoped of yesterday or today, but the administrator for the system is taking a couple of days off and will not be back before Saturday morning at the earliest. After talking about it, Margriet mentioned that there really isn’t a need for us to leave here on Monday since I am not leading the study this week, only going for breakfast. So we changed our plans and I called back again. It looks like they will be here on Monday, but I need to call them to confirm. The installer was in Escanaba installing there and the gal at the office transferred me to his cell phone. He wanted to email me with the exact time when he got back to the office and could look at his schedule. I told him that would be a good trick, since he was bringing me email service. He response was, "Oh." Then we both had a chuckle.

I also found a leak in the roof of the shop. Apparently there is no storm collar around the chimney and some water from the rains came through. I can’t see it from the ground and the chimney also doesn’t have a cap on it, that will need to be repaired when I have all of the scaffolding to get up that high and work. Should be able to reach it from the scaffolding as it is in the corner of the building. Since the thing is made from a cast iron sewer pipe, I probably will need to modify one for a stainless chimney to fit. More putzy work! Only up in the air. Of course I had some empty cardboard boxes under the leak!

Stopped in Alpha on the return from the hardware store to pick up some stamps from the post office. Discovered it closed at 4:15 P.M. and of course we were there at 4:25 P.M. Seems like a strange time to be closing, but expect there is a reason. The town has a speed limit of 25 mph, which is not unusual. The method of enforcing it is I think. All of the streets, except on the circle, have speed bumps in the form of pot-holes. At least that is what I think is the reason they are not repaired. It is rather effective I must say. Wouldn’t dare driving any faster. Most of the time I drive slower. At the little general store you also can get tattoos and piercing. Hope the guy that does the work is not also the butcher for the store! Big news in Alpha is - the lawn on the circle has been mowed! It really is a charming little town that is trying very hard not to die. It appears to have been a rip-snorting iron mining town at one time.

Those dang jellybeans are going to be the destruction of me yet. Seems I can’t pass the bag without eating a couple - or more!

We tried some of the pasties last night for supper. They ain’t as good as my Woman’s!! Margriet put them on a rack in the electric frypan with a little water to heat through. They heated through, but the dough got sticky. They were tasty though, but not up to Margriet’s standard. Yesterday we had what Margriet called our first "real" breakfast - pancakes and bacon. She had made a batch of pancake mix to bring here, so of course we had to try it out. Good as usual. I sure do never tire of smelling bacon frying in the morning.

June 9, 2007 (4:54am)
44º F, Cloudy. Calm.

Good morning,

Another week at an end. Boy the time flies when your having fun! It has been almost a month since we have signed the papers on Guds Nordtre and it seems like yesterday. We are still fooling around with the plumbing and haven’t started on the schedule we had originally set up to get the Hobbit Hus ready for winter. Guess that’s life.

We did get a surprise yesterday. We bought a dehumidifier, got it home, got it set up and ready to go. When I opened the door to the basement of the main house to hook it up and get it running, the basement floor had water on it. Not just from condensation, real water. Margriet had washed a couple of sheet she found packed in the bathtub, using a couple of tubs of water. When she drained it, for what ever reason it appears to have overwhelmed the drain, backing up the system and causing the water to flow onto the floor through the drains. Of course most of the last truckload of boxes were sitting on the floor and the bottom layer of some got wet. While Margriet manned the wet/dry vacuum cleaner to pick up the water, I madly carried boxes to higher ground. I want things to dry some before I tackle that problem. Probably today sometime. Seems the dehumidifier is working well at last check of it last night.

We did get to Iron Mountain and got a dehumidifier. It was about $20.00 cheaper, not as much less as I had hoped, so saved a couple of bucks toward the gasoline cost to go. We also checked out a couple of grocery stores and found the prices to be very high there too. The stores were nice and large, but high priced. A 3# box of bacon ends and pieces we buy for normally $1.99 was $4.79! Didn’t even want to look at what "normal" bacon cost. There were a few things we needed so picked them up, but not all on the list. I can see we will be making a periodic trip to the Amish store and elsewhere to stock up in larger quantities. Much larger quantities. Probably will go back to the system of many years ago when living in northwestern Wisconsin - supply run once a month.

We found ourselves in Iron Mountain at lunchtime, so stopped at the Norther Woods Buffet and Steak House. The buffet we have had before and was just as good this time. Don’t know how their steaks are ain’t never had any. Never have seen anyone eating any either. Of course we stop only at lunch and it might be on the dinner menu. We used it as our main meal, instead of what we had thought of for supper, normally our main meal of the day. We will have the planned meal today for supper instead. OK by me. Everything is good at this house.

The phone batteries finally were finished charging yesterday, so they are now in service and seem to work well. The fist call we received was from a satellite company wanting to hook us up to cable TV, &c.! Didn’t take the offer. Now at least we have one source of communication that works. Hope to have the internet capability on Monday, but will find out for sure today when I call them. That will also mean many changed addresses too and folks to notify.

I did manage to get the hot and cold water lines to the kitchen sink to the shower installed yesterday. Not working, but in. Should be the last time I hope I will need to disturb Margriet’s cupboards, at least for water supply. Now what is left is to install waterlines from the cold water manifold to the shower and connect to the kitchen sink. Also need to plumb the hot water manifold and run all of the hot waterlines. Then move the hot water heater back in place and connect it again.

After supper last night I got tired of scratching my earlobes with my ankle bones so picked up the loppers and started to clear the brush and trees out from the north side of the Hobbit Hus. For what ever reason, three sides of the house have been cleared, but the north side has been allowed to grow wild. That makes it too easy for critters to get in/under the building. I started by cutting out anything the lopper could handle. There are a several larger trees which will need the chainsaw to drop (and the wind from the correct direction not to drop them on the house). Some are maple, which will eventually keep us warm, and a couple are pines, which I hope to make into lumber. There also are a lot of trash growth which will end up on the brush pile. I have to set up a peeling buck too before the trees dry and are hard to peel. They also check and crack much less with the bark off too. Guess I will need to cut a couple of cedars down soon.

In our riding around this countryside (and Margriet’s reading of everything in sight), we are finding more and more things to check out. It seems there is a historical site or park around every corner. This are is doing a pretty good job of preserving it’s past and natural resources. Both of which are in abundant supply. There seems also some special event every weekend in many communities around here. There sure seems to be little time for a tourist to say there is nothing to do here. Local folks too. Each community seems to take a special pride in there accomplishments and like to show it off to anyone and everyone. That is cool! Of the first order! Now we will, in time, have to check them ALL out too.

11:54 am.

The kitchen has cold water! Hooray! Not real nice installation, but pretty! Had to go through the shower with the piping. Not my preferred way, but the way it is.

Time to get a-going.

Second Part

June 10, 2007 (6:05am)
54º F, Clear blue sky and sun, Dead calm wind.

Good morning,

A bit warmer this morning and the day is supposed to be also. It was a beautiful day yesterday. Sunny most of the day, but turned cloudy about sun down looking like it may rain. Never did though. The temperature remained in the mid 70's all day and we had a very nice S-SW wind all day until about supper time. The mosquitoes have been very rare here so far. Different than FISKLAND. There are wood ticks here and I find one out for a walk on my body almost everyday. Only had two that decided to dine on me, but got rid of them before they could really start their dining though. Don’t think I have seen more than two wood ticks at FISKLAND the decade we owned that place.

Our neighbor, John, who owns the land adjoining ours to the west, stopped over yesterday to introduce himself and say Hi. He is from central Indiana, about 75 years old, and comes up for a couple of weeks this time of year then a couple of months in the fall to hunt mostly. It sounded like he was a widower and is getting tired of the almost 8 hour drive to get here. He was born and raised here and graduated from the Alpha school system. He sure does like to talk and we got some of the details of life in Alpha when he was a kid. Lots of them. Interesting! Sounds like I was pretty close to right when I thought that Alpha had bee a rip-snorting little town in days past.

John also told some of the things the previous owner of Guds Nordtre had done. One really sore spot apparently was the building of the pole barn almost on the lot line between the two properties. It sits about 3 feet from the line. Don’t know what the distance is supposed to be, but suspect it is closer to 15-20 feet. It wasn’t so much what he said, but how he said it. I get the feeling that he still wished he had gotten Leo to move it rather than giving in and letting it stand. Would actually be nicer if it were off the line more. There is one tree that is on the boundary line and close to the pole barn I want to take down. It is dying and on John’s property. I told him I would like to take it down before it falls on the building. He had no problem with that, so it will be down before winter.

John did really care for Leo’s workmanship either. I have to admit there is a lot to be desired. He mentioned that Leo was not much of an electrician. I also agree with that. Every light switch has two wires going to it, doubling the necessary wire. Everything is on the wall surfaces too. Hopefully most of that will change. John also said that Leo ran some kind of a flea market from here for some years. Didn’t know where he got all of the new things he sold, but sure had a lot of it. That is the first we heard of that.

We stayed close to home yesterday and I did get something accomplished to show for it. As I indicated yesterday, I got the cold water hooked up to the kitchen sink. Also got the cold line into the shower (shower isn’t connected, but the cold water line is there) and most of the first hot water line to the bathroom sink. It will not be long before I can move the hot water heater back into place and hooked up again. Most of the piping needed to be put behind it is now complete. Sure am tired of working in itty-bitty places down between my ankles! It will be nice to have that finished. I did tear up my left shoulder trying to compress a ring on one connection above my head. At a weird angle and a way I could not get much leverage on the tool. It takes a lot of effort to compress the ring, even with much mechanical advantage of the tool. It happened just about suppertime, so quit for the day and popped a couple of pills. It feels some better this morning, but not right by any means. Probably will favor it some today.

I spent about half of the afternoon looking for the shower mixing valve we bought a couple of weeks ago. I turned this place and the shop upside down several times. Like it just levitated out of here somehow, or evaporated, or something. I finally found it in some welding supplies I had stored on one of the shelves in the shop. I have no memory of putting it there or why. After the hot water heater is back in place and hooked up, I will tackle the shower. Then we can really clean up, rather than just pits and possible, and maybe even go to church again. I find I am running short on ½" PEX Ells so will probably need to run into town to pick some up before completing that job. There is one tricky spot in hooking up the shower. I need to cross a hot and cold line. If it were inside the wall it would not be a problem, but out in the open it is a bit tricky to make it look neat too.

The dehumidifier has really dried out the basement of the main house. Most everything is pretty much dry that got wet in boxes too. All I have to do is to burn the boxes now. Margriet continues to empty and sort "stuff" in the boxes and finds some treasure in almost every one. It really is fun to watch her discover things from my past. Fun for me too. She also is washing some things out, but not in the bathtub, rather in the kitchen sink. Soon she should be able to do it in the Hobbit Hus with hot water - I hope.

4:47 pm.

The hot water manifold is in and charged! Also have minimal temperature hot water running in the bathroom sink. No leaks, at least none found. Discovered the faucet at the kitchen sink is also damaged and will need to be replaced. The cold water passes through the mixing valve and, fortunately, into the shower stall. I had the hot water piped that far. The leak would have drowned Margriet’s sink cabinet otherwise. I ran out of Ells before I could get the shower and the kitchen hot water completely hooked up. Have to get more tomorrow. Hope the hardware store has re-supplied since I think I took all of them last week. Once I can get the gas hooked up, we should have hot water in the Hobbit Hus. also need to replace the toilet yet too.

June 11, 2007 (4:20am)
54º F, Fog and getting light, No wind.

Good morning,

Went to bed a bit early last night so am up a bit early this morning. Looks to be another nice day a-coming. Weatherman agrees too. We had a sun shower yesterday a little before supper time. There were not all that many drops, what did fall were huge. Felt like golf balls as I went out to close things up.

The sun shower reminded me of Uncle Louie. When he was out in the field on the tractor and one came, he would stop and get under the tractor to stay some dry (no cabs on tractors back then). As soon as he could, he was back on the tractor heading home and then down to the lake to go fishing, Said the bluegills bit best after a sun shower and besides, the fields were too wet to work. Sounds like a good excuse to go fishing! I probably would have done the same and probably have, or at least something similar to go fishing or hunting.

First order of business to day is to call the ISP and see what is happening with that and when we will see them. After that we have some bank type business to do and some hardware store shopping to do. Depending on the results of the hardware shopping, either I will finish the piping and installing a new kitchen faucet, replace the toilet, hang the storm door, new electrical fuse box, or finish hooking up the LP in the Hobbit Hus. Not that I have shortage of things to choose from that needs attention, but there are a ton of other things needing attention too. Never a dull moment I would say.

I am surprised at the number of Christian radio stations here. There are about the same number as country western stations. Only one public broadcasting station though, from the University of Northern Michigan in Marquette. Yesterday we had a good selection of Gospel, swing, jazz, and classical music to listen too.

June 12, 2007 (4:42am)
52º F, Clear, Dead calm wind.

Good morning,

As you can tell, we have the internet again. First time from here. The guys finally came here about 11:30 A.M. and spent a couple of hours getting things installed and hooked up. I can’t believe how have this is compared to the old barb-wire system at FISKLAND. They took an extra amount of time since they didn’t have one part, the router, along and had to drive to meet one of the other techs in Florence to pick one from his truck. This also required a different antenna than first thought and they didn’t think they had the right one for this location.

When they were out to see if a signal could be accessed, they assumed we would be in the main house. This house presents different obstructions, trees, than the other so are using the Crystal Falls tower rather than the closer Alpha tower as they originally had planned. Either way it really works well. The antenna looks very much like a very narrow and much shorter TV antenna. It sits a foot or so above the roof of the lean-to that I am taking down, attached to the Hobbit Hus. If the lean-to were not coming down, I would be worried about snow buildup on the roof causing problems. Bet it will be a neat perch for birds too.

The router we chose can be used either for hard-wired or wireless operation. For now, we are using the wireless feature, but eventually at least Margriet’s computer will be hard wired - I think. Don’t believe her’s has a wireless capability. Now we have two more black boxes (that really aren’t black) sitting in the room lit up with some lights blinking at me. Pretty soon we will not need a lamp or other light in the room with all of the glowing green, red, and blue lights on!
After the installers left, we finally did stagger into town to do some banking and visit the hardware store. Have to go back to the hardware store again though. We picked up a new faucet for the kitchen sink and when I took it out of the box, discovered that the cold water connection to it didn’t have any threads cut into the fitting. Not too sure how that was missed, but it was. Sure am glade I checked it out before removing the old one! I also picked up an electrical main disconnect and discovered I had picked up the wrong fuse for it. Have to trade that one in too.

Yesterday, before Margriet got up, I started to cut some of the storage bin racks apart in the shop. Couldn’t make any noise in here, so decided to do it out there. It will be a tough project as they are welded together in places it is hard to get a cut-off wheel into. One of the pieces hung out from the rest and I walked into it. It extended out about eyeball level and it was a good thing I had a hat on, as I was looking down at the floor and not at it. That was the first part to come off! The shop lean-to, soon to be wood shop, is becoming a storage place for all of the pieces I don’t want in the shop. As soon as the water and gas problems are solved/finished, I will have to get to work on the shop in earnest. Need to have some place to build/make some of the changes for the Hobbit Hus and the main house. Building the wood shop should be fun and some work. First time I will be able to do it right, rather than a make-do deal of some kind.

Margriet was finally able to unpack her media center she brought from Enschede. The folks who wrapped it sure did a good job and it took a while to get all of the paper and tape off of it. It looks kind of forlorn though with not much media on it! Only a boombox there now and we don’t have a large TV, so expect it will not be filled anytime soon. In all of the moving and packing, we have only lost one glass and a couple of jars to breakage - it think. That is a pretty good average for all of the times things have been handled and/or moved from place to place.

Hope to get the remainder of the plumbing finished today. Not too sure though since I emptied the hardware store’s supply of PEX Ells and I think I may be two short. Then I can install the new toilet and finish bringing the gas line into the Hobbit Hus. That has been on hold while I got the water leaks plugged. Margriet sure would like to use the stove. Using the new electric frypan is getting old for her now. Still, we have been eating pretty much like a king and queen at this place. The cook we have is a pretty darn good one!

Guess it is time to get this published on the blog and time to get a-going.

On the road again

June 6, 2007 (4:55am)
44º F, Clear, No wind.

Good morning,

A bit cooler this morning than it has been for awhile. It is 36º F at the moment in Crystal Falls and also clear with no wind. Actually it is supposed to be warmer up there than here today. Normally it is a bit cooler up nort’ consistently. That’s OK with us. Expecting drier weather there than here too, at least for the next couple of days.

I did get the truck loaded yesterda+y. Not as full as I would have liked, but enough. My knuckles were dragging on the ground after carrying all of the boxes into the truck. I left the back ¼ of the truck empty, so there is room for the things we want to pick up on the way. Tied a bedstead across the back of the load to hopefully hold it in place. Discovered that I have all of my rope already up nort’, except for the two lines I keep tided in the truck. Will pick more up today to tie the "stuff" we are picking up down. I really don’t like loose loads. Margriet is going to have fun opening the boxes I put on the truck. Many are from Mom’s house and have not been opened since being packed. Some were marked and others not, so there will be some surprises I am sure. I think there will be two, maybe three, more loads before the storage unit will be empty.

The wind died down enough last night so I felt comfortable burning the trash. The mosquitoes were out in full force. I have not been able to get the lawn cut, so it is about eyeball deep. Snow is supposed to be that way, not grass! While the lawn is much bigger up nort’, I expect it will not be as heavy to cut in the sand. At least I hope not. The mosquito population is much lower also, so far. Talked with one gal at church on Sunday and she said the mosquitoes and black flies are terrible this year at their place. They are very close to the Lake Superior lakeshore to the east of us. Hope the prevailing westerly winds keep them there. We do have some low land along the creek, so expect the mosquito population will be pretty heavy there in the woods.

We went to the bank yesterday so Margriet could get her papers notarize and we will put them in the mail today. Once they arrive in the Netherlands, the folks there will know we are alive yet! I noticed on one I had to sign, I have been demoted from "husband" to "partner." Not too sure I like the new title. Seems every year Margriet has to fill out these papers, there are more pages added to them and more blanks to fill in. Guess all governments and institutions are the same - the like red tape.

Bible study went long yesterday. Lots of discussion. Pastor was also in attendance. That always seems to add more chatter and longer studies. We didn’t even finish the unit, but will skip over that. Next week we will be going for breakfast. We have had about 6 weeks or more of this study, twice interrupted by funerals.

Margriet took one of the loaves of bread and some honey-butter for the folks to chew on during the study. It sure didn’t last long. Neither of us even got a piece! Not to worried about that, since there is more here and very good. I think she knows how to make bread. This may have been the best batch she has made too. Some of the loaves will be going with us. She also made leberkase for dinner last night. That and a few slices of homemade bread made a meal fit for a king. I think I ate too much - again.

We will be heading to Manitowoc today, meeting my little brother and my cousin, then heading up nort’. Not too sure when I will be able to add to this. Hopefully it will be soon. Would really be nice if the ISP were set up before the end of the week. So ....

Time to get a-going.

More drippy

June 5, 2007 (4:59am)
49º F, Drippy, N wind, 10 mph.

Good morning,

A rainy day all day yesterday and it looks a bit drippy today, but not to the extent of yesterday. Highway U.S. 41 was closed south of Fond du Lac for most of yesterday with flooding. Some areas had water up to the headlights of semi-trucks! There were no one injured, but there were several vehicles stalled in the water before they could close the road. There were some areas in Green Bay also were flooded, but nothing dramatic.

The rains also curtailed the loading of the truck for our trip up nort’ tomorrow. I really didn’t want to load things wet and then lock them up in the truck for a couple of days. Guess we will have a long day today doing that. Every time I got ready to head to the storage unit, the rain started to come in quantity. Instead I did get some bills paid and some other "paperwork" finished that would not have been done.

I thought I had the Bible study worksheets for today’s study finished, but when I tried to print them out to duplicate, I discovered there still was some work to be done. Glad I looked to it early yesterday and was able to get it finished - then printed out. This one finishes chapter 13 of Matthew and the parables there. Think I will head toward Luke for the next parable group.

We did contact the fixed wireless ISP yesterday and they had good news. We do have the capability to use their system and at present plan too. They should be coming out on Thursday or Friday to set up the system, and hopefully, be up and operating shortly after that. We chatted with a conference call with a tech installing a system some where and the gal in the office. They didn’t have a schedule at hand, so when the tech gets back to the office, they will set something up and email me. If things work as we hope, we should be able to use the system for phone service too. At least for calls across the puddle.

Margriet baked some awesome bread yesterday. Three large and three small loaves of wheat bread. Boy is it good! Think I ate half of a large loaf before supper. Yum! We will probably take one to Bible study today for the folks to enjoy too. If there is some left that is. Most of it went into the freezer and we will take it along up nort’ with us.

I felt queer last night after supper (don’t think it was related to the fresh bread) so went to bed early, even for me. Slept poorly and got up about 2:00 A.M. for a couple of hours. Now I am up again and tired. Probably will be taking a nap before going to church this morning. I feel better now, just tired. Ain’t got time to be sick, so won’t be.

Time to get a-going.

Assembly completed

June 3, 2007 (5:24am)
54º F, Very foggy, SSE wind, 1 mph.

Good morning,

The East Central Synod of Wisconsin Assembly is history for another year. This was kind of bitter-sweet one for me as it will be my last. It also was Margriet’s first. The two gals who were the Bible Study and Devotional leaders were super. Both have a fist full of degrees from very prestigious universities and a bucketful of alphabet soup after their names. Would like to listen to/study with them often. The Bishop and the Associate also had some good messages.

It was a very quiet assembly with little real problems discussed. Budget and rostered "Minimum Compensation Package" were approved without much discussion at all. We also elected new folks for the Council and Officers very calmly. The Synod is on of only 20% of Synod’s that are growing within Church Wide. We also have a surplus in our budget and have been able to give over and above what we had budgeted last year. Not many Lutheran church groups can say that today.

I did run into two other delegates to the Church Wide Assembly in August. Apparently they want us to fly to the Assembly rather than drive. The cost is actually lower to fly than to drive. The money cap on driving expenses is $300.00. The cost of parking is $20.00/day at the hotel, for at least 6 days. We probably will fly out of Marquette and not drive again until returning to Marquette again. Kind of looking forward to it, but not all of the people and downtown big city. Needless to say, it will be an adventure.

Yesterday we got to the Assembly late. For what ever reason, both of us thought it started at 9:00 A.M. instead of the real start an hour earlier! Oh well. Can’t be perfect all of the time. At noon, rather than pay $25.00 ea. for a "box lunch," we decided to take a chance and eat at a restaurant each day. Yesterday pastor would join us as the day before he had to see one of our members who is presently in jail. There really isn’t anything near the Assembly to eat, so we jumped in pastor’s car and headed to Margriet’s favorite place to eat - Old Country Buffet. Howard thought it was a good idea since we didn’t have to wait for a waitress to take our order, we could return sooner. Once we got in the place, pastor decided we probably would be late back again - there was too much to choose from. He thought he could make a whole meal and a lot of time at the dessert buffet alone! We did have a good meal and saved the congregation some money at the same time.

One thing about the Assemblies is there are always booths of folks displaying their programs and some who are selling church related things. It give us an opportunity to pickup all kinds of goodies they are giving away too - notepads, pens, flashlights, high lighters, carabineers, and even some balsa wood gliders we had as kids. They will be sent to a couple of kids we know for sure. Some of the give-away’s are really handy and will be used.

The entertainment at the Banquet was a couple of gals called Tina and Lena ( www.Tina-Lena.com ). A take off on the Ole and Lena books and cartoons, with a mix of music and message added in. They really are good and have been preforming together for over 20 years. They also went to school together and were best friends then. Both came from teaching professions and also are Grandma’s too. They have a couple of very powerful voices and really sing up a storm. Really great humor and message. Had everyone laughing and in a really happy mood.

Church today is Sundae Sunday and Margriet is supposed to bring snacks. Guess we can forget about bringing anything as it will all be there. That’s good timing!

Time to get a-going.

In Christ My Saviour,
